Planets

What's in a birth chart?

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky from where you were born, at the moment you were born. Planets are placed with a real ephemeris, accurate to the arc-minute.

  • SunCore self

The Sun is the heart of the chart: who you are, what makes you shine and the core energy that gives your life direction. The 'sign' you read about in horoscope columns is your Sun sign. It describes your creativity, your will and the way you express yourself.

  • MoonEmotions

The Moon represents your inner world: your emotional needs, what comforts you, your gut reactions and the way you find a sense of safety. It is the most personal point in the chart, describing who you are when nobody is watching.

  • AscendantOuter self

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is your first impression, your doorway to the world and your instinctive reaction to new situations. It changes roughly every two hours, so it requires a birth time.

  • MercuryMind and communication

Mercury describes how you think, learn and talk. It shows how you process information, how you choose your words and where your curiosity flows, and it governs everyday errands, messages and short trips.

  • VenusLove and pleasure

Venus shows your love language, your sense of beauty and what makes you happy. Who you are drawn to, how you love, your idea of harmony and the things you simply enjoy all belong to Venus.

  • MarsEnergy and drive

Mars is your engine: how you take action, what you fight for, how you express anger and where your passion points. The courage and energy you use to reach your goals come from Mars.

  • JupiterGrowth and luck

Jupiter is the planet of expansion, optimism and the search for meaning. Its place in your chart shows where life tends to bring abundance and opportunity, and where your beliefs and horizons widen. It travels through the zodiac in about 12 years.

  • SaturnStructure and responsibility

Saturn stands for discipline, boundaries and the mastery that only time can bring. In your chart it tells the story of maturing, putting in the work and building achievements that last. It completes a lap in about 29 years, which is why the 'Saturn return' is so famous.

  • UranusFreedom and innovation

Uranus is the planet of sudden change, originality and invention. Since it stays in a sign for about 7 years, it carries themes shared by a whole generation; its house in your chart shows the area of life where you most want to break the mold.

  • NeptuneDreams and intuition

Neptune is the planet of dreams, inspiration, art and intuition. It dissolves boundaries and feeds the imagination. It spends about 14 years in each sign, describing a generation's ideals and the area of life where your own dreams flow most freely.

  • PlutoTransformation

Pluto symbolizes deep transformation, rebirth and power. Because it moves so slowly, its sign is a generational influence; its house in your chart shows the area of life where you experience the most profound changes.

  • North NodeDirection

The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. In astrology it symbolizes your direction of growth: themes that feel new and unfamiliar yet help you evolve. The South Node opposite it describes the comfortable, familiar ground.

  • Midheaven (MC)Goals and visibility

The Midheaven is the highest point of the ecliptic in the sky at the moment you were born. It describes your place in society, your career and life goals and how you want to be recognized. It marks the start of the 10th house.
