FAQ

What is compound interest?

Interest is added to your balance and then earns interest itself. $10,000 at 5% compounded annually grows to $16,288.95 in 10 years.

Does monthly compounding make a difference?

At the same annual rate, more frequent compounding gives a higher result: $10,000 at 5% for 10 years is $16,288.95 compounded annually and $16,470.09 compounded monthly.

How are regular deposits handled?

Each deposit earns interest from the day it's made until the end. If the deposit and compounding frequencies differ, we use the effective rate for the deposit period.

Are taxes included?

No. The result is before taxes and fees, and the rate is assumed constant for the whole period.

What does "in today's dollars" mean?

It converts the future balance to today's buying power using the inflation rate you enter: balance ÷ (1 + inflation)^years.
