FAQ

How do I find a percent of a number?

Multiply the number by the percent as a decimal: 18% of 2,500 is 2,500 × 0.18 = 450.

How is percent change calculated?

Subtract the old value from the new one and divide by the old value: going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 = a 25% increase.

Why aren't 20% and 10% off the same as 30% off?

The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 1,000 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 720, which is 28% off in total.

How do I find the price before a markup?

Divide the final amount by (1 + the percent): 118 after an 18% increase was 118 ÷ 1.18 = 100.

What's the difference between percent and percentage points?

Going from 10% to 12% is a 2 percentage point increase but a 20% increase in relative terms. Percentage points are the plain difference between two rates.
